At the turn of the last decade of the 20th century, when the once-mighty Soviet Union had already broken into 15, there were only five countries with nuclear vessels out of 157 designated naval nations — China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States — with India nowhere in the reckoning.

With 25 nuclear-powered strategic missile submarines (and another six building/projected/converted/life extension programmed) and 83 nuclear-powered attack submarines, the US Navy stood at the top of the list, followed by the Royal Navy’s eight Vanguard and Resolution class nuclear strategic missile subs and three types (Trafalgar, Swiftsure and Valiant) of 13 nuclear attack subs, usually deployed between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. Pakistan has vowed to counter India’s successful launch of a nuclear-powered submarine, a move that has thrown off the delicate military balance between the nuclear-armed neighbors.Islamabad said New Delhi’s latest action will intensify an arms race that could draw China into the mix. Pakistan is hemmed in by a financial crisis that could force it to turn to Beijing for military assistance.

“No one should doubt Pakistan’s resolve and capabilities to meet the challenge posed by the latest developments,” said Mohammad Faisal, a spokesman for Pakistan’s foreign ministry. Faisal’s comment came three days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Nov. 5 said the Arihant, India’s first domestically built nuclear-powered submarine, had recently completed its first patrol.

They took his laptop, mobile and iPad, and grilled him over the next 15 hours. By that night, Aggarwal, 27, was arrested under the Officials Secrets Act (OSA) for allegedly possessing 22 sensitive documents marked ‘secret’, relating to the manufacturing and integration of the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos.

Some of the documents included missile blueprints that investigators say have made their way to an operative of Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Continue reading →

The Centre told the Supreme Court on Monday that state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) failed to become an offset partner in the Rafale deal as there were several unresolved issues it had with French company Dassault. In the documents submitted before the top court, the government claimed that the issues pertained to lack of common understanding between HAL and Dassault Aviation.

“The contract negotiations could not conclude mainly due to unresolved issues related to 108 aircraft to be manufactured in India. These issues pertained to lack of common understanding between HAL and Dassault Aviation on following,” the documents said. Continue reading →

“I don’t lie. The truth I declared before and the statements I made are true. I don’t have a reputation of lying. In the massive political controversy over the Rafale jet deal, French jet-maker Dassault has broken its silence on Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of corruption in its tie-up with companies in Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group for offset contracts. “We chose Ambani by ourselves. We already have 30 partners other than Reliance,” Dassault CEO Eric Trappier told news agency ANI in a detailed interview at the Dassault aviation hangar in Istre- Le Tube airbase in Marseille, France.

The CEO also hit back on the Congress president’s charge that Dassault, to bag India’s 59,000 crore order for 36 Rafale jets, chose Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence as an offset partner despite its inexperience in the field, and then lied about details of the deal. “I don’t lie. The truth I declared before and the statements I made are true. I don’t have a reputation of lying. In my position as CEO, you don’t lie,” Mr Trappier said. Continue reading →

On 5 November, India’s first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), the INS Arihant, completed its first deterrence patrol. This was widely reported in the media and the Prime Minister’s Office issued a press release hailing this achievement as the completion of “the establishment of the country’s survivable nuclear triad”.

This is somewhat of an overstatement. A single SSBN does not constitute an effective third leg of the nuclear triad. With a displacement of 6,000 tonnes, the INS Arihant is the smallest submarine in its class and carries short-range missiles, incapable of reaching China. The Chinese Jin class is a 12,000-tonne submarine, the US Ohio class is approximately 19,000 tonnes and the Russian Borei class has a displacement of 24,000 tonnes. All these carry intercontinental-range ballistic missiles. It could take another decade for the Indian nuclear triad to become fully effective. Continue reading →

When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced earlier this month that the Indian Navy had completed its first sea-based nuclear deterrent patrol it was more of a statement of intent than a demonstration of a new capability.

The Indian Navy’s new ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) INS Arihant was the boomer that completed the month-long deterrent patrol. Whilst this is not insignificant – it is the first country outside of the five members of the U.N. Security Council to develop this capability – it also shows how far away India is to achieve its goal of joining the other great powers in establishing a credible sea-based deterrent.
